"Morgan's raid" Harpers weekly

“In the summer of 1863, things were looking very bleak for the Confederate armies in the field with battles and campaigns like Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Tullahoma souring the Confederate morale quickly. One Confederate cavalier, in the midst of these horrible setbacks, decided to launch one of the most daring raids of the Civil War, a raid that would span hundreds of miles from Tennessee to Ohio” (Bishop, Tylor). The government was having money trouble so they decided to put into effect a raid and sent most of the people to battle for their city therefore the government didn't have to pay for all the people in the state becaue most of them fled because they were scared of being killed in the civil war. Morgan was the first raider to go up into the midwest during the civil war. “General Johnson was surrounded by Morgan’s men and lost just about 100 men” because Morgan’s army was many times larger (Roy 101).
