Following decades of continuous foreign rule, from Italian colonization to Ethiopian imperial and military dictatorship, Eritrea became the site of a thirty years revolutionary movement that evoked harsh Ethiopian military actions and resistance from civilians, not only leading to their eventual independence in 1993, but also placing them at an economic disadvantage.
