The Collapse of Galloping Gertie:

A Revolutionary Turning Point in Suspension Bridge Design

Thesis Statement

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was a bridge that spanned the water between the Kitsap Peninsula and Tacoma, Washington. It collapsed into the water, November 7th, 1940 because of faulty design and wind. The research triggered by the collapse was a profound turning point in aerodynamics and in suspension bridge design.

"I have no doubt that the disaster will mark a great step in our knowledge of design."
