Football Before There Was Instant Replay

In the games before instant replay, there were more missed calls. Tony was about to take a big leap in his career. Tony had the idea to bring a 1,300 pound machine to use for the broadcast. Instant replay tried to be used before halftime in the Army vs. Navy game, but it failed. It failed because two wires were not connected. Though Tony Verna was devastated, he kept trying to fix it during the game. He did not want this to be the end of his career, so he found a way to fix it. In the fourth quarter, he got the machine to work. “He said, he saw a missed call on a play involving O.J. Simpson that could have been corrected with replay review,” said the NFL football operations.
