The Boycott caused a lot of disruption in politics and the relation it has to the Olympics. The Olympics are made to be a non-political event, so when politics get involved, it causes a disruption for many people. This event led to the idea that you could involve politics in the Olympics and that, it was okay for a President to make choices for their Olympic team. It also led to future boycotts, such as the 1984 Olympics, when the Soviet Union and other Eastern countries boycotted the Olympics in retaliation for the 1980 boycott. Even today, President Biden brought up the idea of an Olympic boycott, and although the idea was not followed through, it brought back the discussion of political involvement in something that was not meant to be political. ​​​​​​​
