Bing Crosby

Jack Mullin: Man of Sound

Bing Crosby

Bing Crosby was an American singer, actor, and songwriter who achieved great popularity in radio, recordings, and motion pictures. Bing realized that Jack's tapes would enable him to pre-record his radio show with a sound quality that equalled live broadcasts, that these tapes could be edited precisely, and replayed many times with no appreciable loss of quality. This new technology allowed Crosby to record one show in advance, saving him time.

Bing Crosby’s technical producer, Murdo MacKenzie, heard about the Mullin-Palmer machines and arranged a demo for Bing and his crew. Crosby needed to find a high-quality audio recording method to produce his show for delayed broadcast. He hated live performances and loved the relaxed atmosphere of studio recording. He had been broadcasting NBC half-hour shows live from Los Angeles during the 1944-45 season, recording twice, once for the East Coast feed and again for the West Coast. Live radio was an ordeal for him, and Jack Mullin helped solve that. These pre-recorded radio shows were a turning point in broadcasting.
