Sparked by the coal strikes of 1946, the Krug-Lewis Agreement was the government’s reaction to the U.S. coal miners' fight for better health and safety. Although its existence was brief, the reforms of a federal safety code and a universal retirement and healthcare fund became the framework for future bituminous coal agreements, improving the health and welfare of America’s coal miners.
