Improved Barge Canal Complete (1918) [Albany Institute of History and Art]

Canal at Lock 1 Waterford, NY [Albany Institute of History and Art]

Throughout subsequent years, the canal underwent multiple improvements making it wider, deeper, and more accessible to large boats and barges.  As railroads developed, the canal was utilized less but did not cease to impact the region and the country. Today, the renamed Erie Barge Canal serves mainly pleasure boaters and tourists; the 348-mile-long Canal Way Trail opens the historic waterway to hikers, bikers, cross-country skiers, and sightseers.  Even in 2000, cities along the canal were the most densely populated behind New York City, showing the canal's lasting impact on the region.
