The development of steamships was not an easy task. Developing steamships broke many barriers, including making the steam engine more efficient, creating a hull that would reduce drag, and reducing weight. One more barrier that was broken was the public's fear of change. People didn't trust these new technologies compared to older, more reliable sail-powered vessels.

Designers of these new concepts broke barriers in their development of this technology. These technologies paved the way for the replacement of obsolescent sail-powered vessels whose movements were guided by the random winds.
