Poor economic and living conditions, in combination with increased work quotas, prompted East German workers to protest— a revolution against the government and their policies; the uprising resulted in Soviet troops stifling the protests, and ultimately lead to the repeal of previous economic changes, the prevention of further economic reform, and the expansion of the Stasi and surveillance forces.
