Bombardment of Angoon -
Reactions to a Cultural Clash and Delayed Reforms

Thesis

On October 26, 1882, The U.S. Navy bombarded the Tlingit village of Angoon, with the loss of many lives and community resources.  This military bombing was due to the Tlingit's reaction to the accidental killing of the tribe's shaman (doctor) by an American whaling vessel. The subsequent extreme reaction by the Navy was a result of the Navy's lack of understanding of the Tlingit's restorative justice cultural practices.   Reform eventually came in the form of an official US government apology almost 150 years later, but the Tlingit people are still impacted by intergenerational trauma, caused by the 1882 bombardment.
