Annie Oakley: The Woman Who Aimed at a Different Angle

Life in the Poor Houses

Eventually, she got sent to a poor house because her mother couldn't sustain her. Her life during there was horrible. She had no sort of communication, and the staff was rude. They would treat her poorly, not telling her mother about it. Because of this, she decided to run away from there. When she was home, her mother got remarried at the time, but her husband died, so she went back to work harder.

Aftermath

Because she needed income, she joined turkey shoots. A turkey shoot is an event where you are supposed to shoot a gun at a target, in which the closest one wins. Even though she was the youngest and one of the only girls there, she would always win. She even was unable to join them because she always won! Also, Annie sold fowl for money. She collected 200$, which her mother paid for the mortgage for a house, no longer caring about her gun addict.

A turkey shoot uses paper targets in a series of rounds to see which one hits the closest. The target is 58 feet away, the closest one winning.
