Men in the Parade
As you might imagine, most of the supporters who marched in the parade were women. However, there was a small section of men who marched in the parade. According to an article from the National Park Service, these men faced prejudice for supporting the movement. Parade spectators would shout insults such as, “Where are your skirts?” or “Henpecko”.
Outside of the 1913 march, men had been advocates of women’s suffrage for centuries. Some examples are Thomas Paine, Thomas Herttell, Daniel Anthony (father of Susan B. Anthony), Robert Purvis, et al. Before the ratification of the 19th amendment in 1920 many men voted in favor of equal suffrage. These men serve as a reminder that feminism and women’s suffrage are not issues exclusive to women.
