Background

Once Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown on January 17, 1893, the power was in the hands of the provisional government. They cared a lot about keeping their businesses and money, so they created things that gave them power. It was led by the annexation club who became the committee of safety who in the end became the provisional government. The annexation club was actually a secret organization that was formed by Lorrin A. Thurston and it was made to be ready for any moment that the U.S. would try to annex Hawaii. They were able to get the American military on the island and they held a public meeting on January 16, 1893 addressing getting rid of the monarchy.
