Background

Many Barriers to be Broken

In the 1770s through the 1780s, men were often considered the “masters” of women. Fathers would choose their daughter’s husbands. Women were only expected to do the housework and take care of children, not have a job or education. Even being a woman teacher would be very rare in the 1700s. If women wanted to help in the army, they would either be nurses, sew uniforms for soldiers, cook, or clean. Women were not considered capable, so there was a ban against women fighting in combat positions.
