Deborah Sampson

Revolutionizing Womens' Roles in War

"Sampson, Deborah", 2011, Gale in Context: Middle School

Introduction

Before Deborah Sampson fought in the American Revolutionary war, women weren't considered to be able to fight in a war, only participate behind the scenes. Deborah Sampson broke gender barriers by being the first American woman to fight in a war, as well as the first American woman to receive a military pension. She proved that women were equally equipped to help serve their country as men. Because of Deborah Sampson's bravery, women now serve in the military and are still breaking barriers today. Now, there are 208,000 women out of 1.3 million (16%) total people serving in the military.
