(James Watson, nobelprize.org)

James D. Watson, an American molecular biologist who won the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering the structure of DNA, was appointed the first director of the HGP.

"Take young researchers, put them together in virtual seclusion, give them an unprecedented degree of freedom and turn up the pressure by fostering competitiveness."
~ James D. Watson

Francis Collins is a physician and geneticist and the second director of the HGP who led the project in sequencing the human genome.

"The God of the Bible is also the Gpd pf the Genome. He can be worshipped in the cathedral or in the laboratory."

(John Sulston, yourgenome.org)

John Sulston is a British biologist, who won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2002 for the discovery of how genes regulate tissue and organ development. He was the director of the Sanger Institute in Cambridge as they exploited and developed the DNA sequencing method, where he mapped a complete cell lineage and genome of the worm Caenorhabditis elegans.

"It is not a Pandora's box that science opens; it is rather, a treasure chest. We, humanity, can choose whether or not to take out the discoveries and use them, for what purpose."
~ John Sulston
