Tuskegee Airmen preparing for combat mission during World War II
(Gale)
During World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen displayed their ability to perform their assigned missions. Although they received their training at a small airbase in Alabama, which was, at the time, hardly fit to be called an airbase, their skills with the aircraft were unparalleled among pilots around the world. The sight of the "Red Tails" struck fear into enemy pilots and gave allied bombers the assurance that they would be able to release their payload on to the enemy forces. The Tuskegee Airmen were mainly utilized to escort bombers into enemy territory by protecting the bombers from enemy fighters. Most of the Airmen's missions took place over North Africa, Sicily, and the Mediterranean. The Tuskegee Airmen successfully completed 1,500 missions, destroying 260 enemy aircraft, an enemy destroyer, and numerous enemy bases. This demonstration of prolific skill in battle is led the Tuskegee Airmen to break barriers of military segregation.
