THE FUTURE OF ANTIBIOTICS

Dangers of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria

Bacteria are slowly becoming resistant to penicillin because of unnecessary use. Fleming predicted this and warned the world of antibiotic resistance upon seeing penicillin's popularity. Scientists have tried making different versions of penicillin to combat the resistant bacteria, but overuse of the drug is decreasing their capabilities. Scientists are worried that penicillin-resistant bacteria will cause a regression in the medical community. Sadly, many drug companies have given up efforts to find new antibiotics because it is no longer profitable. Propitiously, scientists are still working on making new antibiotics.

Process of Bacterial Resistance that occurs after the administration of antibiotics

"The time may come when penicillin can be bought by anyone in the shops. Then there is the danger that the ignorant man may easily underdose himself and by exposing his microbes to non-lethal quantities of the drug make them resistant."
~ Alexander Fleming
