Fleming's messy working space at St. Mary's Hospital eventually led

to the miraculous discovery of an extremely beneficial antibiotic in 1928

Fleming researched this mold and found that it also killed pathogens responsible for diseases. Fleming and his fellow scientists tried to purify and concentrate the mold, but were only able to produce unstable samples.
