How Japanese Imperialism Affected Korea

Pre-Annexation

Before Japan's annexation of Korea in 1910, Japan had invaded Korea before in 1592, in an attempt to conquer and dominate all of Asia. This series of events is called Imjinwaeran, or Imjin War, and still has cultural impact to this day. Below is a basic timeline of the major events.

1592

Toyotomi Hideyoshi's first invasion- Korean forces were completely unprepared and it took only a month for Japanese forces to reach Pyongyang.

Korea's ally, Ming China, are notified about the invasion and join the battle. This propels the war more into a stalemate.

1597

Ming China and Japan discuss peace talkss for years, but it eventually fails due to misunderstandings and long distance. Hideyoshi starts to fall ill.

Korea and Ming China join forces one last time and are able to take down the Japanese fort in Ulsan, causing Japan to pull out and abandon their invasion attempt.
