After years of war and political intimidation, Japan annexed Korea in 1910 and Korea was a part of Japan until 1945.

Once Japan was in control they did everything they could to wipe Korea's history and culture: burned books, documents, and historical buildings. The Korean people had to take on Japanese surnames, were forbidden to speak Korean, and were forced to work for Japan (Blakemore).
