The news was flooded with images of residents of New Orleans, thousands of people took shelter in the convention center and sports stadium.The sick and elderly were left in nursing homes and hospitals without water, electrical power, plus ventilation, creating many deaths. Rescue teams worked constantly but didn't have enough supplies for the large number of people in need. More than 1,800 people lost their lives and over 1,500 deaths occurred in Louisiana. The Hurricane caused a lot of people to become homeless and over 800,000 housing divisions were either destroyed by the hurricane or damaged. The hurricane also cost over $81 billion in damages and cost over $160 billion. There were some supplies prepared for the storm prior, but it wasn't near enough. In areas that desperately needed help, it took days to deliver supplies to. FEMA also wasted many supplies. FEMA sent truckers carrying ice all around the country. Two years later the agency threw out $100 worth of ice. FEMA also provided 25,000 mobile homes costing $500 million, but they essentially went unused because of FEMA's regulations
