Though Alan Turing never fought in WWII he is undeniably one of the greatest war heroes whose name should be remembered and celebrated. Turing had devised a way of being able to break Nazi Germany's enigma code which had been used to encode the Nazi's messages. With his break of the code, he and others had designed the Bombe a machine cable of cracking the encoded messages within 20 minutes. Now being able to read the Nazi's secret messages the allies now had a massive advantage as they could now gauge the enemy more accurately and learn how best to defeat them. Turing's work is estimated to have shortened the war by 2 years and thus had saved millions of lives.
Turing was an incredibly smart man that had done much in his life that has resonated to even now. Turing is often called the "Father of Modern Computer Science" due to his work and theories about computing machines. Turing is considered to have developed the first modern computer. Turing is also a father of artificial intelligence with him even creating a test to determine either a computer/program was actually intelligent. Though Turing's work didn't end with computers, Turing had an interest in biology and understanding through math around the end of his life. He had published a paper about how certain chemicals in the body of an animal can cause the pattern displayed on them and this is called "Turing patterns". This part of his work is still being explored and tested to see how much truth might be contained within it.
Even though Alan Turing had done so much for the world he is a victim of the homophobic state that much of the world was in at the time. The work he had done during the war was also classified and wouldn't be unclassified after his death. Meaning much of the world didn't even know who was Alan Turing and what he had done in his career when he was punished as a criminal. He is one of many victims that were treated cruelly by the world around them for being homosexual or bisexual.
