AHIHA’s Participation with the Deaflympics:

AHIHA is not only just a deaf hockey school, it is also a hockey team that participates at the Winter Deaflympics!

The Winter Deaflympics are like the Winter Olympics. They are held every 4 years, have many of the same sports, and take place in different locations around the world. The Deaflympics are recognized by the International Olympic Committee. The biggest difference is all these players are deaf or hearing-impaired!

“The team operates under the guidelines of USA Hockey and the USA Deaf Sports Federation. To qualify, athletes must have a hearing loss of at least 55 dB in their 'better ear'. Hearing aids, cochlear implants and the like are not allowed during competition to ensure all athletes play on the same level. AHIHA funds the team with private donations and support from the USA Hockey Foundation.”

AHIHA’s Team USA has won medals in the last 7 winter Deaflympics: 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 2 bronze medals!

2019 Deaflympics:

The hockey team recently participated in the 2019 Winter Deaflympics in Valtellina Walchiavenna, Italy on December 12-21, 2019 and won a gold medal. AHIA helps fund and support the team.

Many of the Team USA players are members of AHIHA’s Varsity squad.
