Desmond Tutu was the cause in helping lead the charge for the anti-apartheid movement to free the African majorities from the apartheid (Esack). The apartheid had not only decided where and how African peoples lived but imprisonded protesters such as Nelson Mandela for life without a fair trial (Esack). Desmond Tutu was also a widely known Christian who devoted his life to Jesus and God (Esack). Tutu is also known for accepting, and not condemning people, of different religons such as Islam (Esack).  ​​​​​​​
