The Plan

The Plan

Before the crash happened, the Sioux City community was coming together to create a plan. Parts of the community that came together to create the plan were the hospitals, the colleges, the emergency responders, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and nonprofit organizations. The community coming together was crucial for the creation of the plan.

“What really made a difference was that group of people knowing each other and knowing that each other's capabilities were. The plan gave us a basis, but how they got there was getting to know each other and working together.”

The actual creation of the plan involved the team coming together to predict the reality of an event happening in Sioux City. The team figured that events like an earthquake or hurricane were unlikely, but thunderstorms, fires, and plane crashes were probable. Mr. Brown said that the plan used for the Flight 232 crash “didn't specifically say ‘in the event of a plane crash’ but ‘in the event of a mass casualty.’ " As a Result of Flight 232, regional community response changed in many other cities and countries throughout the world.

“I know Martha was gone on numerous occasions after that, traveling the country doing slide presentations. People wanted to know how Sioux City did it.”
