                     Rights & Responsibilities

(“Susan B. Anthony on Suffrage and Equal Rights, 1901.”)

Prior to Anthony's works several years ago only men were granted the opportunity to vote. However, that changed in the 1850’s - 1870’s when women wanted their right to vote as well (Mathias). Many women tried their best to stand up for this right. “The 14th Amendment was the first mention of gender in the Constitution, granting all male citizens 21 years old the right to vote” (Mathias). This amendment did not mention anything about women voting which shows the inequality of men and women. Many years later, the 19th Amendment was created which allowed women to vote and have the same rights as men (Mathias). Women valued this privilege and later took different roles in helping run the nation (Mathias).

Susan B. Anthony took on the responsibility for women’s voting rights. Anthony “served on committees, spoke at conventions, created women’s associations, and campaigned for women’s property rights” (Mathias). On November 5th, 1972,  Anthony took the chance to vote even if there were going to be consequences (Mathias). On November 18th after Anthony attempted to vote she was arrested (Mathias).
