Importance

(Klan rally advertisement for canceled October 18, 1924 Klan rally)
Today, even when the riot happened more than a century ago, its importance cannot be forgotten. The riot led to a decrease of members in the Klan, and caused area Klan groups to fall apart (Nevel 89). It showed the Klan that they did not belong in South Bend with its high populations of Catholics and immigrants. A rally planned for October 18, 1924 was canceled because the Klan was afraid of negative publicity before the upcoming election (Tucker 184). Ultimately, the riot did not bring about an increase in members of the Klan. Instead, the riot showed the Klan that Notre Dame was not going to back down.
