"Desmond Tutu and Winnie Mandela protest for Nelson Mandela's freedom" (CNN Desmond Tutu: A Life in Pictures).

Throughout the 1900s, Desmond Tutu was one of the most important figures in South African history, helping to end apartheid and spread Christianity throughout South Africa. Tutu aided in a revolution of peaceful protests condemning apartheid throughout South Africa. He helped in spreading apartheid into a more global matter with many public speeches and protests condemning apartheid (Biography.com Editors). Tutu also helped to cause changes in the South African religious church as Tutu was appointed as the first black Archbishop of Cape Town in 1986 (Biography.com Editors). Tutu’s importance after apartheid cannot be understated as he would go on to release many books, his most notable being No Future Without Forgiveness, and God Is Not a Christian (Biography.com Editors). Tutu would also become head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1995 where he was tasked with handling the repercussions of apartheid (Woo).
