Deng Xiaping could not take the protests any longer. Starting on the night off June 3, 1989, the government ordered the People’s Liberation Army to shoot live rounds at the protesters. Some protesters tried to run but still ended up getting shot. Other protesters tried to defend themselves by throwing things at the army and setting things on fire. The massacre ended in a few hours. Thousands of people died, but the exact number is unknown. Tens of thousands of people were wounded. The government brought in many tanks to the square. Not just the protesters were injured, but also the people living in houses and apartments surrounding the square were harmed by shots fired by the army.
