During this time, jobs were separated by gender.  Women's main jobs were:  housework, nursing, and teaching. It was challenging for women to find work in any other field. The Navy was the first military division to accept women, others were soon to follow.

Needing to find a way to shift the tide of the war into the Allies' favor, the U.S. started drafting men so rapidly that they needed to start looking for alternative options for their code-breakers. Here is when the idea of getting women to work came into play, even though it was new and unexpected. Many people were against it.  During this time, jobs were separated by gender.  Women's main jobs were:  housework, nursing, and teaching. It was challenging for women to find work in any other field. 







Ten thousand women initially volunteered, but only 5,000 successfully passed boot camp.  In the spring of 1942, the first female graduates began their work as code-breakers.  For the first time in U.S history, the separate military divisions were competing for the nation's brightest and smartest women.
